The Fair

The morning of the South Valley Street Fair 2014 was dark and rainy . This was because Anguilla was experiencing the effects from the outskirts of Tropical Storm Bertha. Even though it was raining and windy my Facebook timeline showed persons who ventured out to the Fair early in the morning to get breakfast such as johnny cakes and saltfish. The food looked so good. I knew rain or sunshine I would be venturing out later in the afternoon to the South Valley Street Fair for lunch and snacks.

Friends and Family

As the day progressed the weather improved. When Sherise, Nash and I arrived it was cloudy but humid and we were hungry! We stopped at the first booth and bought saltfish patties which fortified us for the walk down the street and the meet and greets along the way. I was happy to see many friends and family during the few hours we were there. Anguilla’s Summer Festival has started and many persons who live overseas visit the island during this time. We saw friends like Dermel, Khara, Coco and others. We also saw about seven of our cousins who were visiting from the US. It was an afternoon full of smiles and laughter and great music from local talent such as the string bands.

The Food

I have already written two paragraphs and I haven’t spoken much about the food at the South Valley Street Fair 2014. There were a number of vendors with a wide variety of food and snacks. Everything looked delicious. We saw johnny cakes and fry cakes, barbeque ribs and chicken, grilled fish and lobster, different types of soup, conkie dumplings, sugar cake, puddings, local drinks and so much more. It was hard to decide what to buy.

I bought a soursop juice from Gina’s booth and it was really good and refreshing. I also bought a conkie and a half a lobster meal for lunch. As I write this post, I realized that I came home without having any Johnny cakes. Oh well. The good news is that every Friday Johnny Cakes are available from Milly and Fossie in South Valley. The other good news is that in Anguilla, another community fair or festival is always right around the corner.
