The August Monday festivities are anticipated by persons throughout the world each year. The highlights of this day for many are the Anguilla Jouvert and Beach Party. There is nothing quite like it.
August Monday is a Public Holiday and it is held on the first Monday of August each year. Jouvert (pronounced juuvey and correctly spelled j’ouvert) is celebrated in the Eastern Caribbean islands starting from Trinidad all the way up to Anguilla. Jouvert has now spread to other Caribbean Islands like Jamaica as well as the USA like Miami and as far as Europe in London. Once upon a time it primarily was a celebration of emancipation from slavery, Jouvert has now encompassed a range of cultures, people, and locations all ready to celebrate life and simply having a good time.
During the Anguilla Summer Festival, many people expect to see the usual events like the Queen Show, Prince and Princess, Talented Teen Pageant, the local Calypso Show, Leeward Island Calypso, Band Clash, the Boat Races and the Parade of Troupes. However, Jouvert and the Beach Party that immediately follows it are a spectacle worth experiencing. Starting before sunrise, hundreds go out on the road donned in whatever they see fit to walk, dance, jump, crawl, eat, drink, chant, sing and even swim behind, beside and in front of the rivaling local bands that are aiming to win the Road March Championship. If you have never been to the Anguilla Jouvert and Beach Party then next year is a must.
Anguilla August Monday Beach Party
The Beach Party held in Sandy Ground, Anguilla is something worth talking about. It is known as the biggest beach party in the Caribbean. With food, drinks, sun, sea, sand, and music all in one place it is no wonder it is so popular. People come from the USA, Europe, and neighboring island like St Maarten- St Martin, St. Barths, Guadeloupe, and Martinique just to celebrate with Anguilla. The fun does not only end there but it leads up well into the night with entertainment from international artists with this year featuring De Movements Band, Exodus HD, Pantha Vibes International, Beenie Man, Asa Banton, Farmer Nappy and T-Vice.
I hope the videos and the pictures convince you to experience it next year. Enjoy!
